Le Caylar: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Le Caylar lies on the Larzac Plateau, a landscape shaped by agropastoralism. At the same time, the village is one of the prominent gateways to the southern Larzac and provides access to the areas of the Grand Site de France Cirque de Navacelles and the wider Lodévois et Larzac area.

Nature and Landscape

The Roc Castel rises 70 metres above Le Caylar as a rocky spur. The remains of a medieval castle and a viewpoint over the Causse are located on it. Today, the Roc Castel is freely accessible.

The Balade du Roc Castel is an easy, 1 km-long circular walking route from the village to the summit of the Roc Castel, taking around 30 minutes. It leads to the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc Castel, which was partly carved into the rock in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. The circular route ends at the Tour Portal Blanc, built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Culture and History

The parish church of Saint-Martin contains a carved tympanum dating from the 15th century. It comes from an unknown building and was listed as a historic monument in 1905. The present-day Saint-Martin church was rebuilt between 1855 and 1864 on the site of the former Notre-Dame-de-l’Hôpital church.

Getting Around

Le Caylar is easily accessible via exit 49 of the A75. The motorway rest area is located approximately 200 m from the village and is connected to it by a five-minute walk.
