Culture and History
The frescoes in the Church of Saint-Amans depict scenes from the Old Testament and the life of Saint Roch. Including its wall decorations, the church was registered as a historic monument in 2012. On 2 May 2026, the frescoes could not be viewed because of the instability of the building.
Every year on 25 July, the Confrérie Jacquaire de Septimie holds its chapter during the festival dedicated to the apostle at Fontcaude Abbey. Concerts of Gregorian chant are also held there.
Nature and Landscape
The Barres rocheuses de Cazedarnes consist of a layer of limestone deposited in a lake 65 million years ago, which was later folded when the Pyrenees formed. Erosion created hollows between the remaining rocky ridges.
The classified natural area, with its spectacular limestone cliffs, has paths for walks. They offer views of vineyards and garrigue, and, in clear weather, of part of the Languedoc plain. The Puech de la Vigne Nègre route offers panoramic views of Caroux, Espinouse and the Avant-monts.
Hiking and Trails
The short hike to Fontcaude Abbey is a moderately difficult 8.4 km walking route with 240 m of elevation gain. Its shorter variant follows the GR®78-7, known as the Fontcaude branch, through garrigue and pine landscapes.
The hamlet of Fontcaude is a stop on the Way of Saint James (GR 787).
Wine and Events
The Domaine des Mathurins offers year-round tastings of AOC Saint-Chinian and Pays d’Oc wines; the vineyards extend across the entire village of Cazedarnes. The estate also offers tours, vineyard walks, classical concerts and themed evenings.
