La Caunette lies between the Cesse at the foot of the village and a steep limestone cliff above the village. Vineyards lie alongside garrigue and the very white limestone of the Cesse and Brian gorges. The terroir lies on an extensive limestone plateau sloping towards the south, cut through by impressive gorges. La Caunette is part of the Parc naturel régional du Haut Languedoc and is included in the Opération Grand Site de France.
Those choosing La Caunette as a holiday destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and History
The Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption overlooks the river. Notre-Dame Church is protected by registration as a French historic monument; the registration took place by decree dated 4 October 1972. It was given a side aisle in the 16th century. La Caunette bears the label Pays d’Art et d’Histoire du Haut Languedoc et Vignobles.
The old village of La Carambelle is accessed through a medieval gate with a machicolation; steep lanes lead to former troglodytic dwellings. The Château de Pardailhan on the village square dates from the 17th century. A tall brick chimney at the eastern entrance to the village recalls the lignite mining carried out here until 1948.
