Villalier: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The long-distance hiking trail GR 36 crosses Villalier and includes the La Matte–Villalier section. Villalier is considered a village in the Pays cathare at the crossroads of Carcassès, Cabardès and Minervois.

Hiking

The Villalier–Fourtou–La Cassagne circular hiking trail is 6.3 km long and follows an old Roman road, on which there is a Roman bridge over the Orbiel. The Villalier–Menhir de Malves circular hiking trail is 5 km long. The hikes describe the transition from chestnut trees to stone pines as you descend from the Montagne Noire.

Nature

Culture and History

The Church of Saint-André was rebuilt and extended in 1841. Its rear wall contains a former opening to a gallery that is now bricked up; the nearby Maison de l’évêque was a summer residence of the bishops of Carcassonne.

The Domaine de Fourtou, formerly owned by the parents of Armand Barbès, contains the tomb of Armand Barbès. On its front is a plaster cast of David d’Angers’ 1849 medallion.

In the area around Villalier are the Château Comtal, a castle, the Château de Baudrigue, a historic site, and the Basilique Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse, a church. The Abbaye Saint-Pierre à Montolieu is a historic site in the wider region around Villalier.
