Gruissan: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Gruissan fortress was built in the 10th and 11th centuries to monitor the coast and served to protect the village in troubled times.

Culture

The ruins of the Château de Gruissan were listed as a historic monument by decree of 14 April 1948. The Château de Gruissan is a viewpoint 35 metres above sea level, offering views of the surroundings of Gruissan.

Notre-Dame de l’Assomption stands in the centre of the village at the foot of the contemporary Tour Barberousse and is one of the oldest buildings in the municipality. It is a typical 13th-century church of Languedoc. Inside is a large ex-voto commissioned by the municipality of Gruissan, particularly the Patrons-Pêcheurs, in memory of the sinking of four boats from the village on 28 February 1797 and the deaths of 32 sailors.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame des Auzils was classified as a historic monument in 1964. The path to it passes a maritime cemetery, the Hermit’s Garden and the Grotte Saint Salvaire before reaching a chapel with a sweeping panorama over the sea and La Clape.

Le Pech des Moulins is a pedestrian promenade connecting the village and the resort. At the same time, it is a public space in the heart of the resort that combines nature, culture and heritage.

The buildings around the ceremonial basin of the Port de Gruissan and the harbourmaster’s office were awarded a heritage label in 2011. The Fête de la Saint-Pierre festival on 28 and 29 June preserves, from generation to generation, a traditional custom connected with the roots of the fishing village.

At La Cambuse du Saunier, visitors can taste oysters from the Salin de l’Île Saint-Martin’s own production.

Coast

Plage des Chalets is almost 1.8 kilometres long. Swimming and stand-up paddling are possible at Plage des Chalets.

Nature

The Salin de Gruissan covers 322 hectares between the land and the Mediterranean Sea. The Salin de Gruissan tour is open to everyone, takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes and covers 2 kilometres.

The Salin de Gruissan is suitable for observing terns, snipes and flamingos; the Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux de l’Aude organises observation excursions there.
