A monastic community settled on the grounds of Saint-Papoul Abbey in the 8th century. The church and cloister of the former Saint-Papoul Abbey were classified as historic monuments in 1846. When visiting Saint-Papoul Abbey, visitors can experience the Gothic cloister dating from the 14th century.
History
The fortified village of Saint-Papoul preserves narrow lanes and half-timbered houses with projecting upper floors. One gate of the fortifications, known as the “Tour des gardes”, is still preserved today.

Culture and Events
The cultural summer season of Arts en Patrimoine takes place over three summer months. The programme includes, for example, classical concerts, polyphonic music, painting and photography exhibitions, the “Rires & Patrimoine” festival focusing on street theatre, garden workshops and botanical walks.
The village festival “Les Fêtes du Village” takes place every year over three days on the first weekend of July. In the evenings, there are orchestras and discomobile music.

During the tasting held as part of the winter festival, the “Concours du meilleur cassoulet saint papoulais” takes place.
Nature and Trails
The “Boucle Saint-Papoul & Saint-Martin-Lalande” circular route is 10 km long, easy, and starts and ends in Saint-Papoul. In the first section, it is signposted with yellow PR markers; on the return journey, it follows the GR7 and is marked there with white-and-red GR markers. The trail passes through a hilly landscape between the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees, with hedges along the fields.
