Culture
The former centrally located castle of Sainte-Valière is part of the village’s historic appearance. A round tower stands at its northwestern corner and a square tower at its southeastern corner. In some houses, further traces of the former interior layout are also visible, including openings, doors, and fireplaces.
The village church is characteristic of early southern French Romanesque architecture. Its preserved chevet features monochrome decoration known as “Lombard bands.” The original building probably consisted of an apse and a single-nave structure with two or three bays.
A manor house also recalls the history of the village: Simon Cayla had it built in Sainte-Valière in 1888. It was constructed under the supervision of his cousin, the architect Julien Clairec.
The Hôtel Sainte-Valière opens its historic building for concerts, events, and cultural gatherings. Since 2015, Sainte-Valière has also been home to the “Hôtel Sainte-Valière” artists’ residency.
History
The Sainte-Valière winegrowers’ cooperative was established in 1938 and operated until 2010. Historically, vines in Sainte-Valière were cultivated on rocky slopes, stony soils, and recently cleared areas of garrigue.
Historically, grain fields in Sainte-Valière were partly cultivated together with olive trees. Parcels planted exclusively with olive trees were known as “Clos.”
