The Palace and Park of Versailles are considered a perfect model of a royal residence. Versailles is served by three railway stations: Versailles Château Rive Gauche, Versailles Rive Droite and Versailles Chantiers.

Culture and History

The Hall of Mirrors is considered a masterpiece of the Louis XIV style. The Palace and Park of Versailles were converted into a museum at the beginning of the 19th century. The Musée Lambinet focuses on the history of the city of Versailles, particularly the French Revolution. The Salle du Jeu de Paume was also converted into a museum of the French Revolution; the museum in the Salle du Jeu de Paume opened on 20 June 1883.

The Galerie des Sculptures et des Moulages presents a collection of casts of ancient works. The Galerie des Carrosses displays ceremonial state coaches, not travel vehicles. The Cathédrale Saint-Louis has been classified as a historic monument since 1906 and is a masterpiece of French Baroque. The Théâtre Montansier is one of France’s oldest Italian-style theatres.

Gardens and Paths

The Trianon estate can be reached from the palace by walking through the gardens and park in about 30 minutes. A tour of the gardens of Versailles leads to selected viewpoints, groves and pools and explains Le Nôtre’s design concept and symbolism.

The Potager du Roi is a nine-hectare garden protected as a historic monument, built between 1678 and 1683 on the orders of Louis XIV. It preserves a collection of more than 750 old and modern fruit and vegetable varieties. Every weekend from April to October, the Potager du Roi offers guided tours as well as public gardening workshops and short courses; the guided tours are exclusively in French.

Performances and Events

The Palace of Versailles offers opera, concerts, theatre and ballet, including at the Opéra Royal and the Chapelle Royale. The Académie équestre de Versailles has been located in the heart of the Grande Écurie of the Palace of Versailles since 2003, combining the French equestrian tradition with contemporary design. Every weekend, it presents the repertory piece “La Voie de l’écuyère”; afterwards, visitors can explore the stables freely.

Markets and Horticulture

The Marché Saint-Louis is an urban-planning feature unique in France. The Marché Notre-Dame comprises covered market halls that are open from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as the well-known open-air “Carrés”, where organic producers and food vendors set up every week.
