Culture and History
One of the notable buildings is La Halle, a market hall dating from the 16th century. It covers 720 m²; its oak half-timbering is supported by four rows of eleven oak pillars each. The Tour Trajane was built between 1790 and 1792 based on a drawing by Hubert Robert.
The bell tower of the Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens dates from the Early Gothic period and is dated to between 1140 and 1180. The church also has twelve contemporary stained-glass windows created by Philippe Cara Costea in 1998.
Nature
The natural heritage of the Domaine départemental de Méréville includes wet meadows and ponds. The Marais de Méréville features a mosaic of wetland and aquatic habitats, including sedge marshes, reed beds, alder-ash forests, willow scrub and spawning grounds.
Local Tradition
Watercress has been cultivated along the banks of the Juine since the 19th century. Over time, this cultivation has helped shape the landscapes of Méréville. The Villa Paul was established in 1897 and continues a family tradition of watercress cultivation.
Experiences
The Vélorail de la Vallée de la Juine offers a two-hour ride between the valley and the forest, as well as a 12-kilometre journey. The La Charbonnière circular route starts and ends in Méréville. The discovery trail “Méréville, the Watercress Capital” runs along the Juine through Méréville’s watercress gardens.
A guided tour of the town centre includes the Lavoir de Méréville. The Cressonnière at Villa Paul in Méréville is open to the public; Olivier Barberot is happy to open its doors to visitors.
