Landscape and Views

The Loretu viewpoint is located at an altitude of 680 metres. Its view extends from Cap Corse to Fium’Altu and, in clear weather, as far as the Tuscan Archipelago and the Italian coast. One of the area's distinctive formations is A Tozza, a 15-metre-high slate rock pinnacle topped by an iron cross.

Culture and History

Loreto-di-Casinca was initially founded near the Church of Santa Croce and subsequently built up around the Baroque Church of Sant’Andria, which dates from the 18th century. The Church of Saint-André was built in 1760 and extensively restored in the mid-19th century. It has a single nave, side chapels and a choir, all covered by barrel vaults with lunettes. By decree of 19 November 1976, Saint-André was classified as a historic monument.

At the entrance to Loreto-di-Casinca stands A Funtanona, a monumental fountain. It was built around the middle of the 19th century to provide water for the shepherds' herds. A Funtanona has six bronze water spouts with dolphin heads and clear, fresh spring water that is entirely safe to drink. Today, the fountain is used mainly by residents and passers-by.

Pilgrimage and Tradition

Loreto-di-Casinca is one of Corsica's oldest pilgrimage sites. Every year on 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is celebrated here. The painting Notre-Dame de Loretu is carried in a procession every fifty years.
