Pilgrimage

The Notre-Dame de Villethiou Chapel is a centuries-old pilgrimage site and continues to welcome many visitors. It is located on the Way of Saint James; throughout the year, the chapel welcomes pilgrims who use this route. The first written records of the pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de Villethiou date back to the 15th century. On the first Sunday of every September, a pilgrimage takes place at Notre-Dame de Villethiou to celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The chapel was rebuilt in 1843 and continued to be furnished until the beginning of the 20th century. Its structure comprises a nave, a choir, and six chapels on each side of the three eastern bays of the nave.

The association dedicated to preserving Notre-Dame de Villethiou has also made the preservation of the Villethiou spring one of its objectives.

History

The Église Saint-Pierre de Longpré was a priory church with parish functions and belonged to Sainte-Croix d’Angles Abbey; its origins probably date back to the 11th century. It preserves wall paintings from the 13th century, the late Middle Ages, and the early 17th century. Since 26 September 2007, the church as a whole has been listed as a historic monument.

The former Saint-Amand church was destroyed in the 19th century and replaced in the 1870s by a Neo-Gothic church. The Église Saint-Amand has a 16th-century choir and was remodelled in 1873, in the 19th century, by Jules de la Morandière.

Architecture

The Silo de l’Union at 12 rue de la Gare in Saint-Amand-Longpré has held the “Remarkable Contemporary Architecture” label since 2016. It was built during construction campaigns in 1946 and 1948. The reinforced-concrete structure has seven storeys; its design recalls the “ocean liner style” of the 1930s.
