The Carnaval de Manthelan was officially founded in 1869 and traditionally takes place on the Sunday after Shrove Tuesday. Around ten huge papier-mâché floats, up to six metres high, are built for the event. They are often powered by engines and parade through the streets accompanied by bands and fanfares from all over France.
