Vergisson has climbing routes for all levels of difficulty at two locations: La Roche and Le Parvis. The climbing area at the Roche de Vergisson covers grades 4 to 8a.

Active pursuits

Around La Roche, there are numerous marked hiking trails leading to various viewpoints across the unique panorama. The “Les confidences de la Roche de Vergisson” route leads to a summit overlooking the Roche de Solutré and the Saône plain. In addition, Vergisson has numerous varied trails of differing levels of difficulty through vineyards and forests.

Paragliding is possible in Vergisson; however, it is intended for experienced people. Near the car park at the town hall, Vergisson provides a picnic and play area as well as toilets.

Landscape

From the summit of the Roche de Vergisson, there are views of the village of Vergisson and its vineyards below, the Roche de Solutré opposite, and, in the distance, the Beaujolais mountains.

Culture and history

During the Mousterian period, Neanderthals inhabited various caves in the Roche de Vergisson.

In the western part of Vergisson, at the end of the Stone Age, people found sandstone material for building dolmens and menhirs. One of these is a menhir in the hamlet of Chancerons, which was erected at the beginning of the 19th century.

Wine

Vergisson is one of the four villages in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation where exclusively white Chardonnay wines are produced. The other three are Chaintré, Fuissé and Solutré-Pouilly.

By prior arrangement, Domaine Carrette offers wine tastings and direct sales at its cellar at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson and accepts enquiries for tasting appointments.
