Culture
The Musée du Hiéron is France’s oldest museum of sacred art. At the same time, it is one of the few French buildings that was designed as a museum from the outset, when it was built in the late 19th century. It is recognised as both a Monument historique and a Musée de France. The Musée du Hiéron also displays an almost 900-year-old Romanesque portal from Anzy-le-Duc.
The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Paray-le-Monial was built in the 12th century by Hugues de Semur, the Abbot of Cluny. It is considered one of the most significant examples of Cluniac architecture in Burgundy. The Chapelle La Colombière offers guided and self-guided visits.
The Maison de la Mosaïque Contemporaine is an art centre for contemporary mosaic art run by the M comme Mosaïque association. It offers intensive, 35-hour mosaic courses led by renowned artists. Since 2013, the Maison de la Mosaïque Contemporaine has promoted mosaic art through exhibitions of international significance.
The Musée Paul Charnoz is located in a former factory for stoneware tiles and vividly presents the various stages in the history of this business. It displays two monumental tile artworks decorated in relief, covering an area of 21.4 m² and 122 m² respectively. The works received awards at the World’s Fairs in Paris in 1889 and 1900 and are protected as historic monuments. The Musée Paul Charnoz also explains the secrets of stoneware tile production.
