Culture and History
The Church of Sainte-Euphémie has a Latin-cross floor plan and a semicircular apse. Its choir is designed in the Neo-Byzantine style; the painted decorations are by Claude Barriot (1846–1908). The bell tower dates from the 12th century and is listed as a Monument historique.
The Château de Martigny-le-Comte was restored in 1878 as an imitation modeled on the French Early Renaissance. The Château de Martigny-le-Comte and its greenhouse were listed as a Monument historique by decree of 24 February 1995. The Château de Martigny-le-Comte is privately owned and not open to visitors.
The Château de Comune has been documented since 1316 and was abandoned in the 17th century. It has a quadrangular enclosing wall with three round towers, as well as a square keep with a vaulted cellar. The Château de Comune comprises the château in its entirety, its site, the moats, the area of the former pond, the surrounding land, and the dovecote.
Nature
Martigny-le-Comte is located in the Natura 2000 site “Étangs à Cistude d’Europe du Charolais”, designated in 1998 to protect the European pond turtle. The Natura 2000 site includes the Étangs du Grand Baronnet and du Petit Baronnet in Martigny-le-Comte; the site covers a total of 310 hectares of ponds and adjacent wetlands.
