Culture and History

The Domaine de Varennes is a château and chapel complex at 2 rue de Bourgogne in Charette-Varennes. The Château de Varennes was partially built in 1810 and extended and completed in the 1840s. The chapel of the Domaine de Varennes was built between 1913 and 1923 as a small Neo-Romanesque brick building.

The Domaine de Varennes is partially listed as a historic monument, while the chapel is fully protected. Nothing remains of the buildings of the former Château de Charette; however, the motte and the water-filled moats still exist. The former Château de Charette is believed to have been built in the 14th or early 15th century.

The church of Charette-Varennes dates from the mid-18th century and has an attached chapel on the Route de Pierre. The Monument de la Vierge on Rue de la Chapelle commemorates a chapel that was built on the Doubs, destroyed by the river, and later rebuilt as an extension of the church.

Landscape and Nature

Charette-Varennes is part of the ZNIEFF “Basse vallée du Doubs et réseau d'étangs au sud”. The commune is also one of the five communes included in the Natura 2000 site “Les prairies inondables de la Basse vallée du Doubs jusqu’à l’amont de Navilly”.

South of Charette, the outlying settlements lie among ponds and forests through which the Guyotte flows. In the ZNIEFF “Basse vallée du Doubs et réseau d'étangs au sud”, the landscape shaped by the Doubs includes alluvial forests, gravel banks, former river channels, artificial bodies of water created through gravel extraction, marshes, and dry or wet floodplain meadows.

The riparian woodland of the Natura 2000 sites in the lower Doubs valley provides a habitat for the European beaver and enables the black kite to establish itself. The ponds in the Natura 2000 landscape of the lower Doubs valley provide nesting opportunities for western marsh harriers, purple herons, and cattle egrets.

Things to Do

Charette-Varennes has marked hiking trails that follow land-consolidation roads and cross fields. Fishing is possible at various points along the Charetelle, the Guyotte, and the Doubs. There is also a facility for launching fishing boats on the banks of the Doubs.

A parachute drop took place at the Second World War parachute drop site on 25 June 1944. The parachute drop site is freely accessible all year round.
