History
The Vieux Saint-Vincent preserves the towers and entrance portico of Mâcon’s former cathedral. Its Romanesque tympanum is considered exceptional. The Église Saint-Pierre de Mâcon is a Romanesque Revival church built between 1859 and 1865 according to plans by the architect André Berthier. It houses a Gothic Revival organ by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll dating from 1866, which is classified as a historic monument.
The Site Archéologique de Saint-Clément displays the foundations of a funerary church built in the 6th century, from the time of Mâcon’s first bishops. Several dozen sarcophagi were uncovered during excavations at the Site Archéologique de Saint-Clément. The Maison de Bois was built between 1490 and 1510 and is probably considered the oldest house in Mâcon. Its façade, built entirely of wood, features numerous, often crudely erotic statuettes of masked human and monkey figures.
The Espace Lamartine at the Médiathèque presents original and illustrated editions, manuscripts, correspondence and iconographic documents relating to Alphonse de Lamartine in its heritage collections.
Getting Around
The Tracé de la Plume is a one- to two-hour walk through Mâcon’s architecture, literature, gastronomy and history, marked by bronze feathers on the ground. It includes 28 sights with information panels on site; the Tracé de la Plume also has a free mobile app.
