Culture and History

The Château de Josselin is a historic estate open to visitors, with medieval remains and furnished interiors restored at the end of the 19th century. Its three defensive towers rise above the Nantes–Brest Canal. The estate includes a landscaped garden of more than three hectares, with a rose garden featuring 40 varieties, a French garden and an English park crossed by a stream.

The Musée de Poupées et de Jouets is located in the former stables of the Château de Josselin. The Basilica of Notre-Dame du Roncier is a church built in the Flamboyant Gothic style. It houses the effigy tombs of Olivier de Clisson and his wife, stained-glass windows and restored large organs. The organs were restored in 1990 and overhauled in the winter of 2010/2011. The bell tower of this basilica can be climbed via more than one hundred steps and offers views over the medieval town of Josselin.

The Sainte-Croix district is as old as Josselin Castle. It features notable examples of half-timbered houses. The chapel of the former Sainte-Croix priory dates from the 11th and 13th centuries. The 1538 house in Josselin features caryatids and carved beams depicting hunting scenes. The Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Roncier in Josselin became a place of pilgrimage for sick people seeking healing.

By the Water

The towpath along the Nantes–Brest Canal near Josselin is ideal for walks by the water; the adjacent green spaces have picnic tables and deck chairs. Ti War An Dour rents electric boats for trips along the sections of the canal on either side of the Josselin lock.

In the immediate vicinity of Josselin are the Château de Josselin castle and the historic site of Josselin Castle. In the wider region are the ancient site of Tombeau du Géant and the ancient site of Hotié de Viviane.
