Le Tronchet: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Le Tronchet can be explored via well-defined routes and historic buildings. The 11.5-kilometre, yellow-marked Circuit de la Forêt du Mesnil hiking trail starts at Le Tronchet Town Hall and leads to the Pont d’Agou, a very old dry-stone bridge.

Nature and Trails

The Forêt du Mesnil is a 592-hectare state forest managed by the French National Forestry Office, Office National des Forêts. The woodland consists predominantly of deciduous trees, especially oaks and beech trees; conifers account for one quarter of the forest. Roe deer, wild boar, badgers, stoats, weasels, foxes, squirrels and numerous birds live in this habitat.

Another marked route is the 18.2-kilometre Circuit de Mireloup, which was created for horse riders and mountain bikers.

History and Architectural Heritage

The surviving remains of the former Abbaye du Tronchet include the church, the cloister and several rooms built onto its south side. The cloister of Abbaye Notre-Dame du Tronchet has sides measuring 75 metres each; each side consists of eight round-arched arcades. Inside are gardens where monks grew vegetables and medicinal herbs. There is also a remarkable holly tree, planted in 1643.

The parish church of Notre-Dame was built between 1659 and 1679. Above the west portal, it reuses a 14th-century window, and its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. The Chapelle du Haut Mesnil was built in 1875 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The Chapelle du Mesnil des Bois was blessed in 1866; historically, a pilgrimage took place there on the first Sunday of every September. The cemetery chapel is the family chapel of the Surcouf family and probably dates from the 1860s.

Golf and Landscape

The Saint-Malo Golf Resort offers two courses with nine and 18 holes, respectively. The Old Course is a nine-hole, par-36 course measuring 2,646 metres, with a slope rating of 124. It offers views of the Étang de Mireloup and the Forêt du Mesnil.

Food and Dining

Le Jardin de l’Abbaye is a fine-dining restaurant on L'Abbatiale in Le Tronchet. Its bistronomic cuisine is considered authentic, seasonal and sustainable.
