Goulven combines a historic village church with an exceptional coastal landscape: Goulven Bay and the Keremma dunes form a Natura 2000 site covering more than 2,000 hectares, with white sandy beaches, ponds, dunes and salt marshes.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Goulven features a 58-metre-high Renaissance bell tower, which bears the date 1593 at its base. Inside, the church has a Kersanton stone high altar, whose front is divided into fifteen flamboyant arcades. It was classified as a Monument historique as early as 1862.

The Chapelle Pénity is also part of the village’s sacred history. It stands on the site of Saint Goulven’s former hermitage and overlooks Goulven Bay and the bell tower of the village church.

The castles and ruins in the surrounding area add to the historic character: Château de Maillé and Château de Kermenguy are castles near Goulven, while the ruins of Château de Kergournadec’h are also located there. Château de Brézal lies in the wider regional surroundings of Goulven.

Nature and Coast

Goulven Bay is an internationally important area for bird migration, wintering and stopovers by several wader species. These include black-tailed godwits, sanderlings, redshanks, ruddy turnstones, Kentish plovers and ringed plovers.

Other landscape highlights are spread throughout the area: Plage Boutrouilles is a beach, while Île Kerlouan is an island near Goulven. In the wider regional surroundings, Plage Sainte-Marguerite is another beach and Penenes is another island.

Trails and Wind

The Circuit de Saint-Goulven runs along Goulven Bay and climbs to viewpoints overlooking the bay.

In windy weather and at high tide, Goulven Bay is used for kitesurfing, wing foiling and windsurfing.

Breton Specialities

Kouign Amann Berrou offers tastings of traditionally made pastries and Breton specialities.

Staying in Ty Poas

The nature campsite in Goulven at Ty Poas welcomes motorhome travellers and campers from the Easter holidays through to the All Saints’ holidays. For motorhomes, the site offers pitches, electricity, water, toilets and showers, as well as a waste-disposal facility.
