Nature

The Landes de Locarn cover 350 hectares and comprise a complex of natural habitats, including European gorse heathlands, dwarf-shrub heathlands, wooded heaths and peat bogs. The areas are managed by the Cicindèle association through mowing and grazing measures and are accessible all year round.

In Brittany, the Landes de Locarn are among the areas with the highest density of European nightjars. Several bird species use them as a preferred overwintering area, including short-eared owls, hen harriers and common snipe.

Paths and landscape

The 6-kilometre discovery trail through the Landes de Locarn leads through heathland, rocky landscapes and forests to viewpoints. Outside the discovery trail, the heathland can be explored as part of guided tours, for example on public excursions in summer or on request for an organised group.

The Gorges du Corong feature a rocky landscape shaped by spectacular granite blocks, beneath which the Follezou River flows. Near the Landes de Locarn stands the Menhir du Quélennec; it rises above the heathland and offers a wide panorama.

Culture and history

Locarn’s treasure is displayed in Locarn Town Hall. The collection of goldsmith’s works, consisting of four pieces dating from the 14th and 16th centuries, has been protected as a historic monument since 10 February 1948.

The Church of Saint-Hernin was built in the 16th century. It houses a rare 19th-century bell wheel with 11 bells, which is used during ceremonies and folk rituals.

The Chapelle Sainte-Barbe was built in 1631. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs in Locarn houses a painted polychrome terracotta statue of Saint Joseph with the Child, dated to the 17th century; the 18th century is also cited as a possible alternative date. The statue is classified as a protected movable cultural object.
