Vernines: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Vernines lies on a plateau at an altitude of 980 to 1,200 metres and offers a panorama between the Chaîne des Puys and the Dore Mountains. At the same time, Vernines is the last village before the mountain where the Sioule rises.

Landscape

Two paths lead from the village of Vernines to the Puy de la Garde Calvary at an altitude of 1,094 metres. From there, the view extends over the Rochefort-Montagne basin to the west and towards the Chaîne des Puys to the east.

Culture and history

The church of Vernines dates from the 15th century and was built in the late Romanesque style. It houses a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Sebastian from the 14th or 15th century, mounted on a pedestal. The statuette of Saint Sebastian is a polychrome wooden sculpture, dates from the 15th century and was classified as a protected object on 20 January 2004.

The hamlets of Vernines feature remarkably restored farm complexes as well as well-maintained small heritage sites, including bread ovens, wells and crosses. The circular trail „La haute vallée de la Sioule“ enables visitors to discover the architectural and historical heritage of the hamlets, including forges, a château, a bread oven, a wash house, a well, a livestock watering trough and crosses.

Paths and routes

The circular trail „La haute vallée de la Sioule“ is offered and managed by the Conseil départemental du Puy-de-Dôme as part of the PDIPR. The mountain biking route „Haute vallée de la Sioule – Pourcharet“ is a mostly easy-to-ride loop in the shape of a figure eight, with a section at the foot of the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys.

Directions

The Place des Marronniers car park in Vernines is available for the circular trail „La haute vallée de la Sioule“. From the centre of Vernines, Lac de Servières can be reached via minor roads and paths; the IGN map 2531ET is recommended for orientation. The trail is intended for daily use from 1 January to 31 December, subject to favourable weather conditions.
