Culture and History
The Église Saint-Loup was classified as a historic monument by decree of 28 March 1905. It is the only surviving element of the former priory of Sauviat and has a nave divided into five aisles with a pentagonal apse.
The former priory of Sauviat probably dates from the early years of the 14th century and is said to have been founded by monks from Cluse Abbey in Piedmont. In the Middle Ages, a fortified castle, the Château de Sauviat, stood south of the church. Only two towers and fragments of the walls remain of this Château de Sauviat. It has been listed as a historic monument since 13 July 1926 and is privately owned.
The stone cross finial depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child and crowns a modern monument from the 18th century.
