The Le Calvaire natural climbing site has 13 routes on a 15-metre-high rock face, is characterised by its quartzite rock, overlooks Saint-Rémy-sur-Durolle and offers panoramic views of the Monts du Forez and the Massif Central. The Le Rocher du Calvaire climbing crag has thirteen climbing routes with difficulty ratings ranging from 3a to 6c. For cycling, the 16-kilometre “Circuit n°33 – Le Calvaire” route is listed; it begins in Saint-Rémy-sur-Durolle.

Culture and History

The Church of the Nativité-de-la-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie in Saint-Rémy-sur-Durolle is a Gothic building dating from the 15th century. Six frescoes by Louis Dussour from 1947 decorate its nave.

The church houses three polychrome wooden statues from the 17th century: Saint Rémy, Saint Julien and a female saint. The three statues are classified as protected objects; the protection was registered on 9 September 1969. Saint-Rémy-sur-Durolle, formerly called Saint-Rémy-sur-Thiers, is known as the world capital of corkscrew-wick production.
