Nature
The GR de Pays “Tour en Pays des Couzes – Boucle du Val d’Allier n°1” passes through Montaigut-le-Blanc. The “Le Grand Tour entre puys et couze” route leads to Montaigut-le-Blanc and then on to Saint-Julien to explore the former Saint-Nectaire ripening cellars carved into the rock. This route offers views of the Cézalier, the Forez and the Limagne plain.
The hike at Puy de la Rodde is offered and managed by the Conseil départemental du Puy-de-Dôme as part of the PDIPR. From there, views extend over the Cézallier, the Sancy Massif, the Forez and the Limagne plain.
Culture
The upper part of the village, the “bourg haut”, is the historic centre of Montaigut-le-Blanc. Since 2025, Montaigut-le-Blanc has held the “Petite Cité de Caractère” designation.
The originally Romanesque Church of Saint Blaise stands on a fortified esplanade at the upper end of the old village and offers beautiful views. Inside the church is a late Romanesque baptismal font made of lava stone in the 13th century; the interior is fully painted.
The Atelier du Petit Matin is located in a vaulted cellar typical of Auvergne’s wine-growing villages and offers participatory pottery workshops for children and adults.
Local special features
The 140 caves of Saint-Julien were dug into an old ash deposit from the Sancy volcano. Some of these caves were repurposed for ripening Saint-Nectaire.
Orientation and leisure
From the small car park, wooden signs point the way through the lanes of the upper part of the village. The caves themselves are private and can only be discovered from the Chemin des caves and the dead-end lanes leading off it.
