Culture
The fortified Sainte-Madeleine Church was rebuilt and extended in the 14th and 15th centuries on the foundations of a Romanesque church and is listed as a historic monument. Inside, it preserves surviving figurative wall paintings from the 15th century depicting the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi and the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.
The ruins of the Château de Saint-Ilpize are a site classified as national heritage. The site can be visited freely all year round; a downloadable mobile visitor guide supplements the visit.
Trails
The “Boucle du château” is an approximately 15-minute circular walk along the fortification walls and through the former main street of the medieval town. Along the way, restored traditional houses can be seen.
The long-distance hiking trail GR 470 “Sources et Gorges de l’Allier” passes through Saint-Ilpize and offers views of the valley. The circular trail “En passant par Bartaillat” begins in Tapon and leads via Seniquette.

The PR288 route “Aux portes du Château” explores the village of Saint-Ilpize, situated on a basalt outcrop, with its fortification walls, terraced village, castle tower and chapel, and offers views of the valley.
History
The Pont suspendu de Saint-Ilpize is one of four surviving suspension bridges in the Haute-Loire département and was listed as a historic monument in 2015. The suspension bridge was completed in 1879 and replaced the ferry, which was considered dangerous because of the Allier’s numerous floods.
Local Character
The Musée Conservatoire des Cépages de la Ribeyre commemorates Saint-Ilpize’s significant wine-growing activity in past centuries.
