The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Saint-Jean-Lachalm is a Romanesque church with a pointed barrel vault, a square apse and two oculi in the gable wall. Its side chapels were added one after another in the 15th century; it has been classified as a historic monument since 19 March 1908.

The Château de Séjallières was listed as a historic monument by decree of 13 February 1995. It is a fortified house dating from the 15th century and is considered characteristic of the late-medieval fortified houses of Velay. Its history is linked to the d’Agrain lords and its strategic location on the flanks of the plateau overlooking the Allier.

Hiking and climbing

There are four Petite Randonnée circular trails in the municipality of Saint-Jean-Lachalm. PR315 Les villages templiers is a circular hiking trail in Saint-Jean-Lachalm and a moderately difficult 11.2 km route with a duration of 3 hours 15 minutes, 252 m of descent, 255 m of ascent and a maximum elevation of 1,272 m. The trail follows in the footsteps of the Templars, whose commandery exerted its influence across the plateau.

The Via Ferrata des Rochers de la Miramande comprises three routes, is located above the Allier Valley and combines hiking with climbing. Anyone using it must wear a helmet.

Landscape and nature

Mont Recours is a viewpoint overlooking the Allier Valley. A landscape observation board in Saint-Jean-Lachalm offers a view of the Allier gorges.

The Marais de Conil is located in Saint-Jean-Lachalm; the municipality’s open landscapes are characterized by bocage hedgerows and dry-stone walls. The completed work at the Marais de Conil created four depressions with a maximum depth of 60 cm and average areas of 1,500, 1,300, 1,200 and 800 m². Together, they cover approximately half a hectare, or 20% of the area. The banks were designed with gentle slopes to allow vegetation and small animals such as amphibians, dragonflies and aquatic insects to develop; the measures are also intended to increase the nesting and feeding potential of certain waterfowl.

Local products

GAEC des Petits Jean sells dry cheeses directly from the farm in Saint-Jean-Lachalm, from Monday to Saturday. Visitors are asked to announce their visit by telephone.
