Culture and History

The Église Saint-Victor has Romanesque origins dating from the 11th or 12th century. During restoration work in the early 2000s, a previously concealed Romanesque portal and 14th-century paintings were rediscovered at the church. As a whole, the Église Saint-Victor has been listed as a historic monument by decree dated 20 March 2006. The south portal features a rare multi-lobed arch design found only in Velay.

The former castle of Vernassal was owned by the de Bar family and came under the authority of the Bishopric of Le Puy from the second half of the 13th century. It was surrounded by defensive walls and connected to a chapel. The castle was rebuilt in the 18th century; today, only two towers remain. The PR497 La Randonnée des Châteaux runs along the imposing wall ring of the Château de Vernassal.

The Église Saint-Georges, a church, is located in the vicinity of Vernassal. In the wider surrounding region are the Forteresse de Polignac, a castle, the statue Notre-Dame-de-France, a monument, and the Prieuré de Chanteuges, a church.

Landscape and Nature

The Pratement area in Vernassal is part of the Devès wetlands network. In 2010, the restoration of the Pratement wetland in Vernassal was continued as part of the Devès wetlands protection and restoration programme.

The mountains Mont Bar, Le Pouzat, La Vesseyre and La Durande are located around Vernassal. The PR359 Circuit des trois Bornes explores the upper Borne basin as well as the two rivers Borne Occidentale and Borne Orientale.

Trails and Events

The PR362 Circuit des Nautes is a short forest trail or circular route that is particularly suitable for mushroom picking. Along this route, the passage through Les Nautes offers a panoramic view before the trail enters the forest.

The PR497 La Randonnée des Châteaux passes through Vernassal. On 2 August 2026, the Amis de Vernassal organised an annual flea market in the village streets and squares.
