Salettes: Holiday apartments and houses

Salettes combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural history with a volcanic landscape. In the Église Saint-Pierre de Salettes, side chapels form a transept. The Romanesque building was later supplemented with Gothic elements; its 16th-century façade is crowned by a distinctive bell gable. The church has been protected as a historic monument since a decree dated 31 January 1964.

Landscape

The mountains of Suc de Parousset, La Rodde and Chauvelon are located in the immediate vicinity of Salettes. The mountain of Le Chouvel is also nearby. The wider regional area includes the ruins of the Ancienne Chatreuse de Bonnefoy, the Abbaye de Mazan and the Château de Mézanc. The Ancien Prieuré Sainte-Catherine, a monastery, is also located nearby.

Trails and discoveries

The Camp d'Antoune can be explored via a discovery trail. Information panels about the landscape explain the volcanic surroundings and the formation of the Devès volcanoes. The presence of people from the Second Iron Age, who stood in opposition to the firmly established Roman world farther south, has been documented at the Camp d'Antoune.

The PR584 Le camp d'Antoune is a circular hike starting in Salettes. The GR3 Salette–Chadron stage also begins in the square: it heads right in a northerly direction, follows the road on the left, crosses the D 37 and then continues for 200 m towards Bordeyrac. In sections, this stage runs along the edge of an ancient oppidum and offers views of the Loire gorges.

Architectural history

The Château de Soubreys preserves feudal remains dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. On the ground floor of its northeastern tower is a chapel with a keystone, covered by a ribbed vault. The complex consists of two parallel residential wings connected by a curtain wall; their eastern corners are each flanked by a large tower.
