La Chaise-Dieu: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture

The medieval town gradually developed around the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu. The abbey’s museum tour is open from April to November and includes the church, the cloister, the tapestry nave in the former Notre-Dame Chapel, exhibition rooms and the Hall of Echoes.

The Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu offers a themed tour of the tapestries. It covers the history of their commissioning, weaving techniques, the materials used and the iconographic themes. The Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu was founded in the mid-11th century by Saint Robert de Turlande.

The history of the place also includes the Chapelle des Pénitents. It is located in a former 15th-century monks’ refectory. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Brotherhood of the White Penitents converted this former monks’ refectory into the Chapelle des Pénitents.

History

A free map of the medieval town is available on request from the tourist information office. It can be used to discover houses with decorated façades and remains of fortified town walls.

The La Chaise-Dieu Festival organises around thirty paid concerts, free serenades and musicological lectures every year at the end of August. It was founded in 1966 by the Hungarian pianist Georges Cziffra.
