Salers is one of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” and is characterised by houses with turrets, a belfry and town walls. Old town houses preserve an architectural style that reflects the period from the 14th to the 18th century.
Culture and architectural heritage
The Église Saint-Mathieu combines late Gothic architecture with a Romanesque bell tower, portal and porch. Its interior contains a Deposition of Christ from the late 15th century, Aubusson tapestries from the 17th century, reredos and paintings.
The Maison du Commandeur is a Renaissance town house with a gallery in the Gothic style. The Musée de l'histoire de Salers et de ses traditions populaires is located there, but has been closed since 2022 due to building work.
At Les Burons de Salers, a buron was rebuilt in 1996.
Routes and landscapes
La Montagnoune is an easy, 4-kilometre hike marked in blue, with a duration of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The e-bike route from Salers to Puy Violent passes through the glacial valley of the Maronne. It is 37.5 kilometres long, has 1,240 metres of elevation gain, takes approximately 2 hours and is considered fairly easy.
The Esplanade de Barrouze offers views of the surrounding landscape as well as the valleys of the Maronne and the Aspre.
Culinary destinations
The Cave de Salers has a tasting room and a boutique offering five cheeses with a protected designation of origin: Salers, Fourme d’Ambert, Saint-Nectaire, Bleu d’Auvergne and Cantal. Guided tours with tastings are also offered there.
A visit to the Cave de Salers begins in the ageing cellar, where Salers cheese at different stages of maturity is rubbed and turned by affineur Dominique.
The Maison du Fromage et de la Vache Salers offers a video projection, cheese tastings and cheese sales. The Maison de la Gentiane SALERS offers tastings and the sale of Salers.
In the surrounding area, the Maison de la Salers is dedicated to the Salers cow and offers a museum, tastings and a boutique.
