Hiking Trails and Landscape

The summit of Mont-Mouchet in Clavières is located at an altitude of 1,497 m. There is an orientation table with a 360-degree panorama extending from the Monts du Cantal to the Monts du Velay. At Mont-Mouchet, free, self-guided individual visits are possible at any time throughout the year, provided that weather conditions are favorable.

The Puech Farrat route climbs from Clavières to Puech Farrat and offers views of the volcanic region of Cantal and the table-shaped highlands of Aubrac. It also passes a stele honoring the Resistance fighters.

The route La Croix de la Paille is a free, 6 km marked circular hike with a blue, moderate difficulty rating. Six information panels are located along the route. The route runs along forest paths and forestry roads and reaches the summit of the Margeride; parts of the route pass through the forest and along forest edges. An optional detour leads to the 1,370 m-high Rocher Chantal, offering views of Aubrac and the Monts du Cantal; an additional hour should be allowed for this.

The route Le Chemin des écoliers offers views of the volcanic massif of the Monts du Cantal, Saint-Flour with its cathedral, and the Aubrac Plateau.

Remembrance and Local History

In the area around Clavières, twelve steles, four monuments and an ossuary commemorate the tragic events of June 1944; 64 Resistance fighters were killed in the area around Clavières.

In the hamlet of Masset, there is an old communal bread oven in which each family baked its bread once a month. The route Le Chemin des écoliers passes the „Crouzette“, a cross of which only the granite base remains. In the first half of the 20th century, there were six schools in Clavières, including a Catholic institution in the village that was commonly known as the „Couvent“.

Cycling

The cycling route Entre Arcomie et Margeride is a 106.5 km unmarked circular route with 1,886 m of elevation gain and a black difficulty rating, meaning very difficult. In the highlands of Clavières, it offers a picnic stop with a panorama of the Planèze of Saint-Flour and the Monts du Cantal.

The mountain bike loop Le Mont Mouchet et la Bête starts at the car park at the exit of Clavières on the D4 and leads to the Mémorial de la Résistance. There, visitors can view the memorial and visit the museum.
