Montmarault: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

History

The Maison des Trois Roys is one of Montmarault’s oldest buildings and probably dates back to the 15th century. It is considered a witness to the looting and burning of Montmarault during the Wars of Religion. It was later converted into a college founded by Catherine Auvergnat in 1574; the building subsequently served as a town hall, guardhouse, barracks, school and presbytery.

As early as Roman times, Montmarault was a frequently used transit point as well as a small settlement surrounded by walls and ditches.

Nature

The PR9: L’étang de Miquet is a very easy 7.7-kilometre walking route that takes around two hours. The route passes through part of Montmarault’s town centre and then through the surrounding countryside. Halfway along the route, there is a break at Étang de Miquet; swimming is not permitted there.

The Maison du Tourisme in Montmarault offers tourist information, a shop selling regional products from more than 60 partners, a relaxation area and various activities.

At the Marché de Montmarault, producers and traders offer fruit, meat and fish, as well as non-food goods such as clothing, shoes and household items.

Culture

The Musée du chemin de fer de l’Allier displays railway equipment from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the local “Tacot”. The collection also includes a historic French heavy artillery train formation that was used on railway lines from 1914 to 1918.

The historic site of Chouvigny Castle is located in the wider regional surroundings of Montmarault. Also located in this wider regional area are the historic site of Couvent Saint-Bernard Montluçon, Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bellaigue and the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc.
