Coutansouze: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Coutansouze, masonry viaducts, woodland landscapes and traces of religious heritage meet hiking and mountain biking routes. The area can thus be experienced from several perspectives through its structures, nature and specific trails.

Structures and Trails

The Viaduc de la Perrière in Coutansouze is an arched masonry viaduct with several arches. It is 125 metres long and 34 metres high. The VTT'Sioule 14 km – Circuit N°2 mountain biking loop follows the Chemin des Amoureux to the washhouse in Coutansouze and first passes the arched Viaduc de la Perrière. The 16-kilometre Le Belon hiking loop descends to the washhouse in Coutansouze after the Viaduc de la Perrière.

The Viaduc du Belon is located on the municipal boundary between Coutansouze and Louroux-de-Bouble. Construction work was completed in 1869, and it entered service in June 1871. The viaduct is 231 metres long and 48.50 metres high. The viaducts of the Val de Sioule, including the Viaduc du Belon and the Viaduc de la Perrière, are still used by SNCF for passenger and freight transport.

The 12-kilometre Chemin des Amoureux route can be undertaken from Coutansouze or from the Vert Plateau.

Nature and Cycling

The Forêt des Colettes extends mainly across the municipalities of Coutansouze, Échassières, Lalizolle and Bellenaves. Beech is the predominant tree species there; the Forêt des Colettes is also home to rare yellow-bellied toads and alpine longhorn beetles. The VTT'Sioule 36 km – Circuit N°4 mountain biking loop reaches the Forêt des Colettes directly below Coutansouze, near the municipality’s washhouse.

Hiking

Le Gour de l’Annet begins at the Rond point des Fayes forest cross on the D118 in Coutansouze. The difficult, 22-kilometre hike leads through the beech forests of the Forêt des Colettes and the Veauce Valley. It can also be undertaken by mountain bike or on a bridleway.

History

The remains of Coutansouze’s former Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais church are located in the hamlet of l’Étang, southwest of the present-day town centre. A wayside cross known as the Croix Saint-Antoine stands at Les Fayes.
