Charroux is the only village in the Allier department to be listed among “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment can consider Charroux as a destination. Charroux is entirely pedestrianised; there is a car park at the entrance to the village.
Culture
The Porte d’Orient has been preserved as a 13th- to 14th-century town gate. The Cour des Dames is a central place in Charroux and has retained the peaceful character of a medieval retreat.
The Musée de Charroux et de son canton comprises 14 rooms in two fortified buildings. The Maison des horloges displays around 40 working clocks from five centuries, including mechanical public-building clocks and Comtoise clocks.
A guided tour of Charroux’s centre lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, covers 2 km and includes around ten stops. “Les Pierres du Temps” is an outdoor escape game treasure hunt in the heart of Charroux.
Food and Drink
The Fête de la Soupe has been held every first Saturday in November since 2007. Charroux mustard is made from mustard seeds, vinegar and white wine from Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule produced from the local “Tressallier” grape variety.
The Moutarderie de Charroux is a craft mustard factory in Charroux with free admission.
Nature
From the Belvédère in Charroux, views extend across the Bourbonnais plain to the volcanoes of the Auvergne.
