Sévignacq lies on a fertile plateau between the banks of the Gabas and the Lasset. The archaeological evidence found in the area includes tools, arrowheads, pottery shards and around ten tumuli, indicating that the area was inhabited before the Bronze Age.
Those choosing Sévignacq for a trip may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
History and Culture
The Chemin de Saint-Pé runs through Sévignacq and is a pastoral route that has been used since prehistoric times. The Church of Saint-Pierre has foundations dating from the 11th century and a Romanesque portal from the 12th century, which is protected as a historic monument. Its unusual layout comprises two naves and two apses side by side. The main nave also contains a small Cagot door and a Cagot holy-water stoup dating from 1648.
The Romanesque portal of the Church of Saint-Pierre depicts Christ surrounded by Peter and Paul. Small grimacing figures flank the scene and represent the seven deadly sins. The Larribère mill dates from 1859 and has been restored. The Château de Bataille, associated with Jean de Bataille, was built in the 18th century.
Trails and Village Life
The Sentier des vieux moulins is a hiking and mountain-biking trail starting at the church; its circular routes are 7.5 kilometres and 24 kilometres long. The route passes through the Gabas Valley along the foot of a wooded slope and follows the right bank of the Gabas on the return journey. The shorter variant of the Sentier des vieux moulins is intended mainly for mountain bikes.
Sévignacq en fêtes is regarded as an annual village festival held on the Place de la Chênaie.
Cuisine
The menu at Chez Courbet includes homemade fresh foie with grapes, beef cheek braised in Madiran, traditional garbure, braised magret and an omelette with porcini mushrooms. Chez Courbet has been serving dishes made with ingredients from local agriculture since 1920.
