Arzacq-Arraziguet: Holiday apartments and houses

Arzacq-Arraziguet remains a staging town on the Way of St. James. The route from Le Puy, also known as Via Podensis and GR65, runs through the town.

History

At the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century, the bastide of Arzacq-Arraziguet developed through an eastward expansion at the site of today’s Place de la République. The recently restored Place de la République displays the façades of the houses of the former bastide behind arcades and covered galleries.

Culture

The church, built in the 19th century, contains two furnishings from the 16th century classified as historic monuments: the polychrome and gilded carved lindenwood group “La Vierge à l’Enfant”, possibly a donation by Anne of Austria, and a wooden “Christ en Croix”. The village church also has a stained-glass window by the glass artist Emile Thibaut depicting Saint James the Greater.

The Roman villa of Lalonquette is located in the vicinity of Arzacq-Arraziguet. The Abbaye de Pontaut is also located nearby. In the wider regional area are the Château de Pau and the Abbaye de Sauvelade.

Nature and trails

A 2 km loop leads around a 20-hectare lake. It is accessible on foot or by mountain bike and can be walked without particular difficulty; it is used to observe the local fauna and flora.

A 2.5 km walking trail invites visitors to discover the typical bastide with its arcades, the Tour de Peich as a remnant of the former castle, and its manor houses. One of the trails is classified as the “Sentier d’Émilie”.
