Uza: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Church of Saint-Louis in Uza was listed as a historic monument by a prefectural decree dated 18 July 2003. It was built according to plans by the Bordeaux architect Louis Michel Garros and was intended to provide the workers of the local forges with a place for prayer. A wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, known as Notre-Dame de Contis, was transferred to the church around 1850. The church is currently closed to the public.

Once Uza has been chosen as the destination, the personal travel itinerary can also include renting a holiday apartment.

Culture and History

A First World War memorial was erected on the shore of Lac de la Forge in 1926 by Bertrand de Lur-Saluces. It takes the form of a sculpted lantern for the dead, topped by a statue of Saint Louis.

The forges of Uza were founded in 1759 by Henri-Hercule-Joseph de Lur Saluces to develop a craft activity in the iron and steel industry there. The forge complex has been classified as a historic monument since 3 May 2004. The Vignacq stream supplied the driving force for the hammers and bellows of the Uza forges via a dam.

Landscape and Trails

The Piste cyclable du Vignac cycle path leads from Uza through pine forests towards Contis-Plage or Cap de l’Homy. Lac d'Uza is a peaceful place to linger and take a shady break.

Agriculture

Organic asparagus is grown on the sandy soils of the Domaine d’Uza. The white or purple asparagus from Uza is harvested without chemical inputs on an area of more than 18 hectares.
