Culture and History
The Church of Saint Nicholas was originally built between 1547 and 1577. Its present-day nave was constructed in 1778 and consecrated in 1782. The interior contains a baptismal font dating from 1669, a statue of Saint Nicholas from the 16th century, and paintings from the 18th century.
The Fountain of Orschwihr is located on Place de l'Église. It has a ten-sided basin and an octagonal central pillar and was replaced by a copy in 1992. Stettenberg Castle, also known as Altschloss, was probably built in the 12th century, destroyed in 1375, and is now characterized by the remains of a square keep.
The monumental nativity scene in the Church of Saint Nicholas is around one hundred years old and attracts numerous visitors from the end of November to the end of January.
Trails
The Sentier viticole d'Orschwihr can be explored independently and features information boards. The educational vineyard trail provides information about vegetation cycles and the individual steps of winemaking and leads over the Bollenberg and the Pfingsberg.
The Circuit du Bollenberg mountain biking loop passes through Orschwihr as well as Bergholtz, Bergholtz-Zell, Rouffach, and Westhalten.
Nature
The Bollenberg is located in the immediate vicinity of Orschwihr, between Rouffach, Orschwihr, and Westhalten. The 363-meter-high hill, made of Jurassic limestone, is home to a small protected natural area that is mainly visited by hikers.
The Sainte-Croix Chapel on the Bollenberg can be reached via a short, stony, steep lane that leads uphill from the village of Orschwihr from the east.
