Turckheim: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Turckheim has preserved three medieval town gates and significant remnants of its medieval town walls. The Porte de Munster was built in the 14th century; its windows decorated with scallop shells suggest that it was a stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela. The lower section of the Porte de France dates from 1330 and originally served primarily for Turckheim’s economic exchange with Switzerland. Of the three gates in Turckheim, the Porte du Brand had the most pronounced defensive function and was equipped with a drawbridge over a moat and a portcullis system.
