The Murbach Valley lies at the foot of the Grand Ballon, the highest peak in the Vosges mountain range. Murbach Abbey was officially founded on 13 May 728 by Widegern, the Bishop of Strasbourg.

Culture
The present-day Saint-Léger Abbey Church dates from the first half of the 12th century. In 1756, after the nave had been destroyed, the former Saint-Léger Abbey Church became a parish church; the choir and transept were preserved.
Saint-Léger, the former abbey church, was classified as a historic monument by a decree dated 1 October 1841. The former abbey gate, together with its portal and the buildings at 6, 7 and 8 Rue Principale, was registered as a historic monument by a decree dated 30 December 1985.
The Notre-Dame de Lorette Chapel was built in 1693. The Calvary along the Way of the Cross to the Notre-Dame de Lorette Chapel has been restored.
The historic site of Abbaye Saint-Léger de Murbach is located in the immediate vicinity of Murbach. The ruins of Château du Hohrupf and the ruins of Hugstein Castle are also nearby. The ruins of Château du Hungerstein are located in the vicinity of Murbach.
Trails
The Murbach–Hohrupf Ruins hiking trail is designated as a circular route for the general public. The Murbach–Wolfsgrube–Lieserwasen–Judenhut–Munsterackerle mountain biking circuit is 16.54 km long and has 640 metres of elevation gain.
The moderately difficult Langmatt–Judenhut circular route can also be explored on snowshoes when there is plenty of snow.

Mount Hohrupf is located in the immediate vicinity of Murbach. The mountains Le Demberg, Geisskopf and Ebeneck are also nearby.
