History

The Kembs hydroelectric power plant was inaugurated in 1932 by President of the Republic Albert Lebrun.

Since 2015, the Kembs hydroelectric power plant has carried the French “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label.

Culture

At the Kembs hydroelectric power plant, the Jardin des Nixes leads to an exhibition gallery from which visitors can view the turbine hall.

The Kembs-Niffer lock is the auxiliary lock of the Niffer lock site. The site is located where the Grand Canal d’Alsace and the Canal du Rhône au Rhin meet at the Rhine.

The two buildings at the Kembs-Niffer lock designed by Le Corbusier have been protected as “Monuments historiques” since 2005 and are considered a rare example of 20th-century architecture at an industrial facility.

The Maison du Patrimoine presents the history of Kembs from antiquity to the present day through permanent exhibitions. It uses objects, eyewitness accounts, and archival documents in its exhibition design.

Waterways and Routes

The outdoor area of the Kembs-Niffer lock is freely accessible year-round. The Maison du Patrimoine offers guided tours by prior arrangement.

The Port de plaisance de Kembs is located on a stretch of water belonging to the former Canal de Huningue. From there, recreational boaters can reach the Grand Canal d’Alsace and the Canal du Rhône au Rhin via the large Kembs-Niffer locks.

Basel is an access point to EuroVelo 6; the Huningue Canal runs through the Petite Camargue Alsacienne to Kembs. A Voie Verte follows a forest road from south to north through the state-owned Hardt Forest.
