Syddjurs Municipality combines 137 km of coastline with diverse landscapes and special cultural experiences. In Mols Bjerge National Park, habitats range from dry nutrient-poor grasslands and heathlands to ancient broadleaf forests and open beaches shaped by Ice Age glaciers. The hills reach heights of up to 137 m and form the basis for numerous hikes and viewpoints. Hiking between nature and history

For longer hiking days, the Mols Bjerge Trail provides clear orientation: The 80 km route is divided into four daily stages and passes natural and cultural-historical attractions along the way. The national park also has 35 shorter routes that lead through interesting landscape areas and return to their starting point with a car park. Hikers can easily return to their starting point using bus route 123. In Ebeltoft, the Kløversti consists of four routes totalling around 27 km around the town and through the surrounding landscape.

A particularly historic walk is the 4.5 km Oldtidsstien through the northwestern part of Ringelmose Skov. The route starts and ends at Bregnet Church. Along the way, you pass a long barrow, six dolmens, several burial mounds, a ford and a sacred spring. There are also hiking routes on the grounds of the Molslaboratoriet, allowing nature experiences to be combined with further excursions in the region.

Cycling and water experiences along the coast

Mols Bjerge National Park has a well-developed network of cycle routes. Gravel paths through natural areas and quieter roads along the coast and through small villages offer different opportunities for cycling tours. The Helgenæs Route is approximately 20 km long and follows small asphalt roads with little traffic through varied terrain with flat sections and inclines. Around Syddjursland, the coast offers calm, sheltered waters in many sections that are well suited to kayaking. There are also overnight sites for kayakers along the coast. In summer, guided snorkelling tours are offered at designated coastal locations.

Castles, museums and vibrant culture

The ruins of Kalø Castle can be reached via Denmark’s oldest medieval road. Kalø Castle was built in 1313 by Erik Menved; the ruins include a staircase with a viewing platform. Ebeltoft is also home to the Fregatten Jylland, the longest wooden ship in the world, which now serves as a museum about its own history from warship to royal ship. Glas – Museet for glaskunst showcases modern international glass art and has an active glass workshop as well as a creative workshop for visitors.

The Renaissance castle Rosenholm, dating from 1559, and its adjoining castle park provide insight into the life of a noble family in historic Denmark. Museum Østjylland is represented in Syddjurs Municipality by three historic buildings: Farvergården, Det gamle Rådhus and Skatkammer Siam. All three museums offer free admission to visitors. The town hall in Ebeltoft houses exhibitions and activities for adults and children that are open year-round.

Maltfabrikken in Ebeltoft also makes its own mark: This meeting place and retreat combines art and creativity, knowledge and wildness, food, music and community. The Øvre Strandkær Visitor Centre conveys the area’s natural and cultural experiences, with a particular focus on plants, animals and geology. At Besøgscentret ved Jagtens Hus, everyone interested in outdoor life, hunting and nature is welcome; the exhibition explores ecosystems, wildlife and the development of hunting in Denmark. At Sletterhage Fyr lighthouse, visitors can climb the tower and view an exhibition. Karpenhøj Nature Centre offers, among other things, a wilderness brunch as a visitor experience.
