A stay in Ugelbølle offers three distinct highlights: the beach, hiking and the history of the landscape. The water at Ugelbølle Beach is very shallow, making swimming especially suitable for families with small children. The Molsruten trail runs along the beach, while a protected geological site lies south of Ugelbølle. Depending on your interests, your holiday can range from swimming and a short circular walk to taking in the Ice Age landscape. These differences also help guide your search for a holiday apartment: first consider which experiences you want to shape your days.

Hike the Molsruten or take a short walk

The Molsruten is about 80 kilometres long, running from the bathing establishment at Riis Skov in Aarhus to the harbour in Grenaa. It is part of the E1 long-distance hiking trail. The E1 Molsruten, established by Dansk Vandrelaug, runs along Ugelbølle Beach. The roughly 80 kilometres describe the scale of the entire route, while the section along the beach offers a specific connection to a stay in Ugelbølle. Check local conditions before setting out on a hike.

For a shorter walk near Rønde, try the Stenrunden: the circular route is 4.2 kilometres long, passes five large erratic boulders featured in the project, and is listed as taking about an hour to walk. This makes it easy to distinguish the time required for this walk from the total distance of the Molsruten. The Stenrunden combines a walk with a specific destination along the way: the five erratic boulders.

An Ice Age landscape

The Rønde-Ugelbølle hills are a terminal moraine ridge that formed in front of a glacier 200 to 400 metres high. The ice came from the Baltic Sea and reached Ebeltoft, Mols and Rønde 18,000 years ago. It slowly melted there, leaving behind glacial valleys such as Kalø Vig and stones of all sizes. The ridge, valley and stones are therefore part of the same story of how the ice shaped the landscape and what remained after it melted.

The protected area south of Ugelbølle is considered a geological site of interest. The protected landscape covers 139 hectares of farmland between Ugelbølle and Kalø Vig. The farmland is protected in order to preserve the view from the old Aarhus–Grenaa road across the hilly terminal moraine around Kalø Vig. From the viewpoint on Tangvejen between Ugelbølle and Ugelbølle Beach, you can look out over the protected farmland. This view connects the agricultural land with the landscape that is being preserved.

Swimming and fishing at Ugelbølle Beach

Ugelbølle Beach has a car park, a toilet and a bathing jetty. The water is very shallow; swimming conditions are considered very good and are especially suitable for families with small children. Conditions for swimming may vary depending on the season. Facilities may also change, so it is advisable to check their current status before your visit.

There are good fishing opportunities at the point east of the car park. Follow local fishing rules there. Swimming, fishing and hiking offer different ways to enjoy your stay; deciding which ones you want to focus on can also guide your search for a holiday apartment. Choose your accommodation according to the experiences you want to enjoy, and compare the relevant location details.
