At the foot of Arrenæs lies the village of Kregme. Its distinctive features range from a long history of settlement to striking landscape views and a walk by the lake. Kregme Church, Grævlingehøj and the paths on Arrenæs appeal to different interests: history and architecture, open countryside or outdoor activity. This gives you several distinct options to focus on during your stay.

Village history and church architecture

The village has been settled since the Iron Age, dating back to around the year 500 AD. The oldest part of Kregme Church is more than 800 years old. These two dates tell of different time spans: the history of the settlement and the building history of the church.

The area around Kregme Church is designated as a church setting, considered particularly important for experiencing the interplay between the church and the landscape or village environment. The church stands on a small, steep hill between Roskilde Fjord and Arresø. Due to the terrain, an additional section was built on the north side of the chancel, giving the church its distinctive irregular character. Kregme Church also contains a heavily restored image of the Massacre of the Innocents, dated to between 1200 and 1250.

Views and open countryside

The viewpoint at Grævlingehøj near Kregme offers views over Arresø and Roskilde Fjord. Access is via Guldsmedevej, a side road off Sommerfuglevej. This is distinct from Grævlingehøj near Lille Kregme, where dry, sunny and open coastal cliffs provide suitable habitats for rare species. Here, views and a distinctive natural environment sit side by side: the landscape is not just a backdrop, but also a habitat.

Hvide Klint is a protected open space with a natural character close to the town. This gives the open space a different focus from the church history and sweeping views at Grævlingehøj.

A walk on Arrenæs

If travelling by public transport, you can start your walk on Arrenæs at Kregme Church; from there, the route follows the lakeshore. This provides a named starting point and a specific route. If you would like to include a walk in your travel plans, this offers a different way to experience the landscape than the viewpoint: the route follows the water rather than opening up the view from a single spot.

Which focus suits your trip?

These differences give your travel planning a practical direction: would you prefer village and church history, sweeping views over Arresø and Roskilde Fjord, open nature at Grævlingehøj, or a walk by the lake? Choose the focus of your stay based on the experiences that interest you: culture, landscape or outdoor activity.
