Frederiksberg: Culture, Art and Green Discoveries

Frederiksberg combines historic buildings, contemporary art, distinctive green spaces and wildlife experiences. Frederiksberg Church was built in 1734 by the architect Felix Dusant. Frederiksberg Palace was built between 1699 and 1735 and served intermittently as the royal family’s summer residence until the middle of the 19th century. Bakkehuset also tells the story of Frederiksberg’s cultural past. The authentic Golden Age house belonged to Kamma and Knud Lyne Rahbek from 1802 to 1830. They opened their home to authors, opinion leaders and scientists of their time. In Kamma Rahbek’s romantic garden, visitors can experience the aesthetics, colours and even the authentic scents of the 19th century. STORM offers a different approach to culture, with entertaining insights into the significance of Danish humour and satire – historically and to this day.

Møstings Hus combines history and the present: the building was constructed in 1800 and is now an exhibition venue for contemporary art. Professional artists develop site-specific exhibition projects there. Cisternerne, by contrast, leads beneath the green space of Søndermarken Park. The former water reservoirs house a contemporary art venue; changing exhibitions are designed to create an immersive experience in the unique underground surroundings. STORM, Bakkehuset, Møstings and Cisternerne are so close to one another that they can be reached on foot.

Green spaces, animals and special experiences

For quieter hours, the garden of Landbohøjskolen offers its own world of plants: more than 6,000 different plants grow there, and the garden can be explored on foot. Søndermarken is used for jogging, walking dogs and strolling through the hilly, wooded landscape. Wild plants, long meadow-like grass and owls in the old trees shape some of the park’s distinctive impressions.

Copenhagen Zoo provides insights into animals, nature and the protection of animal species and natural areas. More than 4,000 animals from around the world live there. One striking feature is the Leopard Trail: it is 160 metres long and the longest of its kind in Europe. Boat tours are offered in Frederiksberg Garden in summer; rowing operations are run by Svendsen's Boat Service (Svendsens Bådfart).
