Tejn combines a rich fishing history with experiences by the water. The former herring smokehouses, the harbour and maritime activities offer different perspectives: sometimes the focus is on the town’s development, sometimes on the Baltic Sea or local beer production. When choosing a holiday apartment, it therefore matters which side of Tejn you want to shape your stay: fishing history, harbour life, beer culture or exploring the water together.

Fishing Village, Harbour and Smokehouses
For a long time, Tejn was a small fishing village without a proper harbour. Previously, fishermen brought their catch ashore at a simpler, unprotected stretch of coast; a proper harbour was built in 1868. Herring processing is also part of the town’s history: Tejn once had 18 herring smokehouses, spread along streets around the coast and the old harbour. The smokehouses were therefore not confined to a single spot, but shaped various parts of the town.
The Røgerinoen Route runs through Tejn. Signs, photos and QR codes tell the story of the old smokehouses and bring the history to life in different ways. At the end of the pier at Tejn Harbour is the old Isværk, where ice was once made for the fishermen’s catches. The harbour, smokehouses and Isværk offer insights into different aspects of the local fishing history.
Beer from Tejn and Maritime Experiences
The Penyllan brewery reveals another side of the town. It works with wooden barrels, slow ageing and its own yeast cultures. Thousands of litres of beer mature over a long period in the large cellars. When the bar and shop are open, visitors can sample the beer where it is made, close to the boats and harbour buildings. Check the bar and shop’s current opening arrangements before visiting.
At ivandet in Tejn Harbour, visitors can explore the Baltic Sea’s underwater world and wildlife with marine biologists and enjoy maritime activities for the whole family. During school holidays and on public holidays, ivandet offers activities using waders, fishing nets, water viewers or snorkelling equipment. These make it possible to explore fish, algae, small animals and life in the harbour at close range. Compared with the Røgerinoen Route, the focus here is on observing the Baltic Sea and enjoying maritime experiences; the activities are available during school holidays and on public holidays.
Tejn and the Rest of Your Journey on Bornholm
Tejn Harbour is a good stop for recreational boaters travelling along Bornholm’s north coast. When planning a longer trip, getting to the island is also relevant: Bornholm can be reached by ferry, plane, bus or train. The ferry crossing from Ystad in Sweden to Bornholm takes one hour and 20 minutes. Check the current timetables before travelling.
Bornholm’s smoking tradition extends beyond Tejn. Bornholm’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, and herring has been smoked there ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where fish is smoked traditionally over open chimneys using alder wood. The island also offers other attractions: Ekkodalen in Almindingen is Bornholm’s largest rift valley. Bornholms Middelaldercenter is a 15-hectare open-air museum that presents 14th-century Bornholm in an engaging, interactive way.
