Dobrkovice lies in a deep valley of the Vizovice Highlands at an elevation of 276 metres. The village combines a pronounced rural structure with remarkable evidence of its history and culture.

Landscape

The Holomňa stream flows through the centre of Dobrkovice and is a tributary of the Olšava. The Chlupáč forest is also closely connected with the municipality: within the cadastral area of Dobrkovice, it covered a total of 120 hectares. Dobrkovice has preserved its agricultural character. Between the valley, the stream, the forest and the open areas of the village, a landscape emerges in which natural and rural elements stand directly alongside one another.

History and culture

The history of Dobrkovice goes back a long way. The oldest documented historical name of the village is recorded for the year 1360. Among its notable cultural landmarks is the Baroque statue of Saint John the Baptist, dating from 1744. It stands on a bare ridge above Dobrkovice at a crossroads and has been protected as a cultural monument since May 1958.

The village also contains several smaller religious and commemorative sites. The local chapel was consecrated in 1997. The Chapel of Our Lady, Help of Christians, stands on the village square beside a bridge over the Holomňa stream. A wooden bell tower dating from 1832 is also located there; its bell bears the year 1935.

Another detail of the village’s history is the cross in front of house no. 27. It was consecrated in 1947 on the occasion of the first Mass celebrated by Vojtěch Fuglíks, who came from Dobrkovice. The monument to those who fell in the First World War was erected in 1921. It stands above a bend near the building of the municipal office in Dobrkovice.

Location and connections

Dobrkovice lies 1 kilometre east of the main road running from Uherský Brod via Velký Ořechov to Zlín. The nearest railway station is in Biskupice. Thus, both its setting in the Vizovice Highlands and its location away from, yet close to, the aforementioned main road form part of the village’s distinctive character.

Walk through the village

A walk through Dobrkovice leads from the village square to the upper end of the settlement and then onwards towards the ridge above the village. Along this route, different facets of the village come into view: the square with its chapel and bell tower, the rural streets, the climb to the higher crossroads and the Baroque statue of Saint John the Baptist standing there.
