Ostrov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Ostrov lies in a landscape shaped by the Sázava, the Nezdínský stream and woodland. One of the area’s distinctive landscape features is VKP 62 – Meze u Ostrova, a registered significant landscape feature consisting of a system of field boundaries with trees and shrubs from natural regeneration. The natural formation “Kamenné stádo” is also located in the northern part of Ostrov’s cadastral area.

Nature and Landscape

“Kamenné stádo” is associated with a local legend telling of a shepherd and a flock that were turned to stone. According to the legend, the quartz stones associated with them are still scattered across the pasture and along the edge of the forest today.

Cycling Route

Cycling route No. 4156 runs along asphalt, paved and unpaved surfaces and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. It connects Ledeč nad Sázavou with Sázava u Žďáru nad Sázavou.

History and Craftsmanship

The first written mention of Ostrov dates back to 1408; at that time, payments from Ostrov and Veliká to Ledeč Castle are mentioned. On 14 August 1870, the hill above Ostrov was renamed Deklarant.

The “Ostrovský mlýn” mill is also part of the local history. It was powered by the Nezdínský stream. In the mid-19th century, the mill also housed a small glass-cutting workshop.

Local Traditions

At the second Traktoriáda on 28 September 2024, the competition course included a slalom, reversing, transporting a cup filled with water, a water ditch and pulling a heavy tyre. At the eighth masquerade procession in 2025, koblihy and a warming drink were sampled before the procession through the village.
