Culture and history

The Premonstratensian monastery in Nová Říše was founded as a convent for women in 1211 and later converted into a monastery for men. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul dates from the second half of the 17th century and contains rare interior furnishings: frescoes, an organ, a wooden pulpit and wooden pews.

The monastery library contains more than 20,000 volumes. Four rare herbarium volumes from the 18th century in the monastery library served as the model for the decoration of the so-called Novoříšská keramika. The monastery complex in Nová Říše also houses an exhibition entitled “Síň Pavla a Antonína Vranických”.

Svatá Markéta is a church in the area surrounding Nová Říše. Almost the entire poetic oeuvre of Otokar Březina was created in Nová Říše.

The cycle tour from Telč to Želetava follows the red trail markers and a cycle route to Nová Říše. The “Duše Regionu Renesance” route leads away from the well-known tourist centres to wooded, remote places and to hilltops. Roštejn [Doupě] is a castle in the wider regional surroundings of Nová Říše.
